Customer Return vs Courier RTO: The crucial distinction

In Indian e-commerce, returns fall into two fundamentally different categories with vastly different cost implications:

1. Courier RTO (Return to Origin): The package never reaches the customer. It fails delivery due to wrong address, fake orders, or customer refusal at doorstep. You lose forward shipping and return courier charges, but the inventory is typically unopened and restockable.

2. Customer Returns: The customer accepts delivery, opens the packaging, tries the product, and returns it within 7–10 days. Here, you lose forward freight, reverse courier charges, inspection/repackaging costs, and an estimated 10%–20% of returned items cannot be resold at full price due to damage or missing tags.

The 'Blended Return Tax' on every profitable sale

If your customer return rate is 18% and RTO is 12%, nearly 30 out of every 100 packages shipped fail to produce clean revenue. The reverse shipping fees and inventory write-offs incurred by those 30 failed units must be absorbed by the 70 successful orders.

This creates an invisible 'Blended Return Tax' of ₹45 to ₹90 added to the real cost of every single delivered unit. If your product pricing does not account for this blended tax, scaling sales only accelerates cash burn.
