Introduction:

MongoDB is a popular and widely used NoSQL database management system. It falls under the category of document-oriented databases, which means it stores and manages data in a format similar to JSON documents. MongoDB is designed to be highly scalable and flexible, making it a suitable choice for a variety of applications, particularly those with rapidly changing or evolving data requirements.

Steps

Step 1:

Navigate to the Database page and click on the Build a Database button.

Step 2:

Since we will use the DB for educational purposes, we select the 3rd option, which is free of cost, but the performance is limited.

When you’re working professionally, you can choose other options for performance.

Step 3:

Select a cloud provider in which the Database instance is deployed.

Also, with respect to the cloud, the pricing changes.

If you’re new to the cloud, select AWS as the provider.

Step 4:

Select the region where you want to deploy the server

If you’re located in Europe, then select the Europe region, or if you’re in Asia, then select the Asia region

Select the nearest region to your location.

Step 5:

Give a name for the DB instance in order to identify it.

Step 6:

Click on the create button to create the DB server.

Step 7:

After the DB server is created, you will be redirected to the Security Quickstart page.

Select username and password as the authentication type, which is okay for the learn purposes.

If you want to store real-time user data, then you need to change to certificate-based authentication.

Step 8:

Create a username and a random password.

This username and password are used as parameters to connect with the database

Copy the username and password, store them in a notepad.

Step 10:

Click on the Create User button and proceed to the next section.

Step 11:

You need to select from which environment you’re going to connect to this database.

For now, select Local Environment.

Step 12:

Here, you need to specify from which IP address you’re going to allow to connect to this Database.

If you have static that is not going to change in the future, then you might enter your Static IP here. So connection to this static is allowed by default, and other IPs are blocked.

For a normal user, just enter 0.0.0.0, which allows all IP addresses by default.

Step 13:

Click on the Add Entry button

Step 14:

Click on the Finish button to create the user. Then we finally connect to the Database and add values to it.

After the database is created, it will be shown in the Dashboard.

Connect to the Database using the VSCode extension:

Click on the Connect button

Click on the Drivers section

Copy the highlighted string and store it in the notepad.

Replace the password with the one you copied during the username and password creation

In your VSCode, search for this extension “MySQL Weijan Chen” and install it

Once the extension is installed, you will see an icon in the sidebar.

Click on it to open the panel.

Click on the plus icon

Select the MongoDB database

Enable connection string option

Paste the string that you copied from the MongoDB Dashboard

5. Click on Connect and save the connection.

Result:

Once the connection is successfully established. Now you can see the list of databases inside this MongoDB instance and the documents inside the databases.
