Thumbnail image

Goal:

This blog aims to provide a comprehensive guide to capture a thumbnail image (i.e., first frame of the video )

Input:

Sample video .

To check its properties like codec formats , bitrate , etc., run the below command

ffprobe <file_location>

For example
ffprobe input.mp4

Process:

To capture thumbnail of a video , run the following command

ffmpeg -y -i <input_file_path> -vframes 1 <output_file_path>

-y : Overwrite output files without asking for confirmation.

-i <input_file_path> : Specify the input video file (replace <input_file_path> with the path and filename of your actual video).

-vframes 1: Tells FFmpeg to extract only one frame from the input video.

<output_file_path> : The name of the output thumbnail image file (replace with your desired filename and location).

For example

ffmpeg -y -i input.mp4 -vframes 1 thumbnail.jpg

Result:

After running the command thumbnail will be generated . It capture the first frame of the video.

To check the output file properties run ffprobe <output_file> command.

Capture an Image in particular time

Goal:

The purpose of this blog is to educate readers about how to capture an image from a video using ffmpeg

Input:

Sample video .

To check its properties like codec formats , bitrate , etc., run the below command

Process:

To capture image in a video , run the following command

ffmpeg -y -ss <time> -i <video_path> -vframes 1 -q:v 2 <output_file>

-y: Overwrites the output file if it already exists.

-ss <time>: Specifies the start time in the video from where you want to extract the frame. In this example, it is set to 2 minutes and 25 seconds.

-i <video_path> : Specifies the input video file path.

-vframes 1: Specifies that only one frame should be extracted.

-q:v 2: Sets the quality of the output JPEG image. The value ranges from 2 (highest quality) to 31 (lowest quality). You can adjust this value as per your requirements.

<output_file> : Specifies the output file name for the extracted frame.

For example

ffmpeg -y -ss 00:00:12 -i input.mp4 -vframes 1 -q:v 2 capture.jpg

Result:

After running the command image will be generated . It capture the frame in given time of the video.

To check the output file properties run ffprobe <output_file> command.
