Introduction:

Telegram bots are powerful tools that can automate repetitive tasks, interact with users, and provide a seamless experience within the Telegram messaging platform. With just a few steps, you can set up your bot and start exploring its potential.

Prerequisites:

Before you dive into creating your Telegram bot, make sure you have the following prerequisites in place:

A Telegram account

Python (Python 3.6 or higher recommended

Steps:

Step 1: Create a Telegram Bot Using BotFather

We first need to register the bot using the BotFather.

Open the Telegram app and search for the "BotFather" bot and click on the First Profile, which shows first (one with a blue tick).

Start a chat with BotFather by clicking the Start Button at the bottom of the chat and using the "/newbot" command to create a new bot.

Follow the instructions to choose a name and username for your bot.

2. Once your bot is created, BotFather will provide you with a unique access token. Keep this token safe, as you'll need it to interact with your bot programmatically.

Step 2: Set Up a Virtual Environment

Open your terminal or command prompt.

Navigate to the directory where you want to create your bot project.

cd /home/ubuntu/telegram_bot

Run the following commands to create and activate a virtual environment:

python -m venv bot-env source bot-env/bin/activate

Step 3: Install the pyTelegramBotAPI Library

With your virtual environment activated, run the following command to install the pyTelegramBotAPI library:

pip install pyTelegramBotAPI

Step 4: Create a Python File for the Bot

Create a new Python file named bot.py in your project directory.

Open bot.py and import the necessary libraries:

Step 5: Implement Bot Functionality

Add the following code to your bot.py file to create a basic bot instance and handle start commands:

Customise the handle_start function to implement different responses and interactions.

Step 6: Running the Bot

Navigate to the directory where our bot.py is located

cd /home/ubuntu/telegram_bot/

Activate the virtual environment.

source bot-env/bin/activate

Now run the bot by running the following command in the terminal

python bot.py

Result:

Open Telegram and search for the bot, and enter the command /start. Now you can see the welcome message from the Telegram bot below.
